Redeploying The Operating System on a Managed PC

In this article, we will look at how you can re-deploy the Operating System on a Managed PC. A Managed PC is a computer that is managed by IT Services and is connected to the Community Connect Network. You will need to follow the procedure for "Deploying an OS on a Unmanaged Workstation", your PC is unmanaged

Warning: This task will delete the entire contents of the C:\ Drive and will re-install a fresh copy of Windows 10 and base applications.

Perquisites

  • You must have the System Build Role assigned to your User Account or have access to the RM Management Console
  • You will need the PC Name from the Asset Sticker on the PC Tower
  • You must be using the Wired Network and have PXE Boot enabled in the BIOS

Please note: The Managed PC will reboot several times during the install process. This is normal. Do not unplug \ switch off the PC or remove the network cable, while the deployment is running. 

Method 1: Using the RM Management Console

  • Login to the RM Management Console
  • Click Build Computer 
  • Make sure Rebuild Using Current Settings is selected and Windows 10 Default Template Task is selected.

  • Click get a fresh copy of the Operating System, when rebuilding. This will download a copy of the OS Image from the build server. 
  • Tick Schedule Task and click OK. There is no need to edit the schedule, as the task will no be scheduled for 10 minutes time. 
  • Click OK to execute the task
  • The computer will automatically reboot in 10 minutes time and will then boot to the Build Server
  • Deployment will start, once Windows PE (Windows Pre-Install Environment) loads.
  • Re-installation will take approx. 1 and a half hours.

Method 2: Boot to the Build Server, Using PXE Boot (Pre-eXecution Environment)

  • Power down the machine, by holding the power button, until the machine switches off
  • Press the power button again, to switch the machine back on
  • Tap the F12 button, until the Boot Menu appears. (You may be asked for the BIOS Password)
  • Wait for the machine to boot to the Build Server and for Windows PE to load. 
  • When prompted, login with your username and password
  • To build a computer from scratch, click Build New PC, followed by next
  • To rebuild a computer from the Recovery Partition, click Build PC from Cached Image, followed by next. 
  • When prompted, type the computer name, followed by next. Leave any other settings as they are. 
  • Click next to execute the task
  • The build process will start and take approx. 1 hour 30 to complete.
