Securely Format The Drive on a Managed Workstation
Last Updated 8 months ago

Sometimes, there is a need to perform a format on a Hard Drive, especially if the drive is being going to be used in another system or is being recycled.  Securely formatting the disk, will make the data on the disk unrecoverable, as it "scrambles" the data, by overwriting each piece of data with a random character, several times.

Please be aware: You do not need to use this task, if you are performing a redeployment of a Managed or Non Managed workstation.

To do this, follow the below procedure:

  • Power down the machine, by holding the power button, until the machine switches off
  • Press the power button again, to switch the machine back on
  • Tap the F12 button, until the Boot Menu appears. (You may be asked for the BIOS Password)
  • Wait for the machine to boot to the Build Server
  • When prompted, login with your username and password
  • To build a computer from scratch, choose the Task Format Disk
  • Click next to execute the task

The time it takes to securely format the disk will vary. This depends on the size and speed of the disk and if the disk is has a SSD or a traditional spinning disk installed. However, in most cases, it will take several hours for the format to complete.
